Happening now, to change the future

Sarah Lawrence Environmental Action (SLEA) is on a mission. Emma Niwa (’14) and Ben Berton (’14), co-founders of SLEA, are heading efforts to turn SLC a little bit greener. From petitioning for more eco-housing to those new composting bins in the Pub (use them!), SLEA is taking crucial steps towards creating a more environmentally conscious and active face of Sarah Lawrence. Perhaps most important are the efforts SLEA is making to renegotiate where AVI Fresh sources the food on campus. Today outside Bates, SLEA fleas (the affectionate nickname assumed by club members) were petitioning for signatures to show student support for local food.

However, the issue of local food on campus is a bit more complicated than recognizing the insanity of importing apples from New Zealand and California when we live in such proximity to top quality apple orchards, not to mention all the other produce and livestock produced in the Tri-State area. SLEA and the Sustainable Committee have been working with AVI and hitting their fair share of roadblocks. Hopefully today’s petitions and personal comments will demonstrate an interested and involved population that is genuinely concerned with what we are eating and where it comes from. For the rest of the semester, SLEA will have more opportunities for you to get on board and show your support for positive, green action on campus. Check back for more updates, and a soon-to-come in-depth interview with Niwa and Berton…

Nina Sparling (Editor, “What’s Up”) is a bi-coastal aspiring bread baker frustrated with the current food system. Originally from Berkeley, she moved to New York, complaining most of the way, until she found the Met and figured out the subway (but still has serious envy for Bay Area vegetables). Currently a sophomore at Sarah Lawrence, Nina studies languages, political ecology, and geography and tries to figure out how they all relate.
